Dark Phoenix (the last X-men film from Fox?) finally hit the theaters this month with a lot of critics and moviegoers calling it the worse X-Men film ever. There’s a lot of blame going around for the lack of logical plot development and laughable CGI in the film that won’t help box office sales either. Even though this well-known comic book story has been told before in X-Men 3: The Last Stand, the movie Deadpool 2 spoiled the events of Dark Phoenix well before the film’s release.
The X-Men films have been known to take a coherent timeline between each movie and fire them out the window with a major concussive blast. However, the second romp with the merch with the mouth dropped a major spoiler for Dark Phoenix that no one caught unless played back today.
The folks at ScreenRant were the ones who caught this possibly unintentional connection between the two films, but we’ll break it down for you.
Spoiler Warning for anywhere that hasn’t seen Deadpool 2.
While still grieving the death of his loved one, Vanessa (Morena Baccarin), Wade Willison (Ryan Reynolds), stops by the Charles Xavier School for Gifted Children. Wade, aka Deadpool, is looking to change his ways—although minor—by joining the X-Men and becoming a legit superhero. He and Colossus (Stefan Kapičić) take a stroll through the mansion but Wade notices that none of the big names from the X-Men are around. A quick cut and we see the core team which includes Beast, Nightcrawler, Cyclops, Prof. X, and Quicksilver, are actively hiding from Deadpool minus Jean Grey and Mystique.
The scene was played for laughs but if anyone has seen Dark Phoenix—or the trailers at least—those lack of two characters in the “hide and go seek” scene is a huge telling.
Deadpool 2 director David Leitch as gone on record to say that the X-Men cameo was always in the script and that the scene was sent to Simon Kinberg for framing purposes. Kinberg was in the middle of production with Dark Phoenix in Montreal. It can be debated whether the scene was intended to be a spoiler or not. We may or may never know.
