Avengers: Endgame offered fans so many different story elements for their favorite characters over the course of it’s 3 hour runtime. Currently the second highest grossing movie of all time (and rapidly approaching the number one spot with less than $100 million to go), the film offered closure to several interwoven stories that have existed throughout the 22 Marvel Cinematic Universe films spanning over a decade. The original 6 Avengers all seemingly had their character arcs brought to a fitting conclusion. That is, all but one, who seemingly has a new lease on his story and gained more “girth” to an originally static personality. I’m talking, of course, about Thor.
While there was some minor controversy over his new look, “Fat Thor” turned out to be a shining star in the massive cast. Seeing a god like being that is over 1500 years old have one of the most humanizing reactions to the awful events after the snap really helped grow the depth of a character that really didn’t even come into his own until the third film of his trilogy. Now, showing the physical rigors of depression. Thor shows us what one form of “medication” via copious amounts of food and alcohol to deep with his pain can do to even the most powerful of beings.
And, as Thor portrayer Chris Hemsworth tells Variety, he enjoyed this new take on the God of Thunder.
“I enjoyed that version of Thor. It was so different than any other way I played the character. And then it took on a life of its own.”
While the writers tirelessly worked on their comprehensive script, the directors crafted a meticulous pace and direction, and the studio oversaw their connected film universe, Hemsworth lets it be known that the actors, who have poured themselves into these roles, had just as much input. In fact, the original plan was to have Thor regain his godlike physique during the final battle, but Chris felt this version made more sense, and fought to keep his ‘potbelly’.
Thor’s character arc throughout this film was unexpectedly the one that fans could relate to the most. While human characters like Tony Stark, Natasha Romanoff, Clint Barton, and Steve Rogers all had traits in their stories any of us could connect with, it was ultimately the Asgardian that seemed the most “human”. And, while Hemsworth’s contract is now up, he’s ready to continue telling Thor’s story, and it looks like he’ll be joining the Guardians of the Galaxy on their next adventure.
