Avengers: Endgame was at the center of some controversy (what isn’t these days?) involving a character you probably wouldn’t have expected going into the movie. Thor. If you’ve seen the movie, you know that the God of Thunder put on some weight in the movie, and he was used as comic relief throughout the movie, before ultimately helping to defeat Thanos in the final battle at the end of the film. Apparently, people on the internet weren’t the only ones mad, as people on set were as well.
In a recent interview with Express, Avengers: Endgame writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely spoke about Thor’s transformation, and how members of the cast and crew didn’t really care for it.
“There was a sad moment where it was like, ‘We’ve got this gross, disguising body for Thor now. And then they unveiled it and it’s just kind of like everybody else’s body here. There were many people on set who were angry at us about doing that to Thor. He kills the biggest bad guy in the MCU and it’s such a failure. It breaks him completely.”
In regards to the change, Chris Hemsworth has commented on it, saying:
“There’s definitely more improvisation in this compared to the previous one. The stakes were as high as they could be. But we found a great way to have another version or another… more growth [laughs] in the character. And something unexpected again.”
He added:
“That was so much fun, and I’m very grateful that it happened this way. We finish strong as opposed to the other way around.”
Though people will complain, some out there have said that it’s cool to see a fat character in a key role on screen, and if you’ve seen the movie, you know he turns out to not be the joke of the story – but a crucial part in helping the Avengers win. Had the people behind the movie shown Thor reverting back to his normal in-shape self, there would have been people complaining about that as well. There’s really not a scenario in which people won’t complain – at least I can’t think of one.
