The Star Wars film franchise has been an endearing foundation of geek culture for over 40 years. No one could have guessed the massive impact these movies would have on multiple generations when the first film, A New Hope, was released in 1970. Along with a compelling “western in space” story, Star Wars gave us some of the most beloved characters in all of film history. One character who is loved more so than most is Chewbacca. But, now, unfortunately, Peter Mayhew, the original actor behind everyone’s favorite wooly Wookie, has passed away.
The 7ft 3in actor passed away on April 30th in his Texas home, surrounded by family. He had issues from his height, and had recently had spinal surgery, but the family announced he passed away from a heart attack. Peter was first discovered while working as an orderly in London. He used to joke that all he had to do to get the role was “stand up”. Mayhew played Chewie in the original trilogy, as well as Revenge of the Sith in 2005 and The Force Awakens in 2015. Mayhew not only played the lovable Wookie on screen, but was a delight to all of those on set, as well as to fans worldwide.
His family posted a lovely tribute on Twitter, as well as many friends reacted via social media to his passing.
