Stephen King adaptations seem to be very popular again with audiences and in Hollywood. In between IT: Chapter 1 being a hit, and IT: Chapter 2 being one of the most anticipated horror films in recent years – we also got another adaptation of Pet Sematary. But it looks like the spree of new Stephen King films won’t stop there, as it’s being reported that another adaptation of Salem’s Lot is also in the works!
Now what makes this an interesting announcement is that it’s also being reported The Conjuring director James Wan is producing this new film! It also looks like Gary Dauberman, who penned both IT: Chapter 1 and The Nun, will be writing the screenplay for ‘Salem’s Lot.
As a huge fan of the novel ‘Salem’s Lot, I understand the potential is there for not just a more faithful adaptation – but one that truly excels as a reimagining of Dracula. At its core that’s what ‘Salem’s Lot is – a modern day epic inspired by Dracula. And to see a movie that recognizes and respects how massive of a scope that is, that would be truly glorious. Especially considering how few vampire movies get released for mainstream theatrical runs these days.
The film was previously adapted as a miniseries in 1979 by The Texas Chain Saw Massacre director Tobe Hooper. It was adapted again as another miniseries in 2004.
As for the original novel’s plot…
Author Ben Mears returns to ‘Salem’s Lot to write a book about a house that has haunted him since childhood only to find his isolated hometown infested with vampires. While the vampires claim more victims, Mears convinces a small group of believers to combat the undead.
Roy Lee and Mark Wolper will also produce the film, with writer Gary Dauberman doubling as an executive producer.
