While there have been several great Spider-Man movies, no other actor has quite played the part like Tobey Maguire. Perfectly capturing the awkward charm of Peter Parker while embodying Spider-Man‘s snarky playfulness, Maguire gave what many consider today to be the best interpretation of the character. Since his exit in 2007’s Spider-Man 3, there have already been three different interpretations of the character so far, including last year’s Oscar winner Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
Maguire has remained out of the spotlight since playing Spider-Man, but has continued to contribute great performances in films like Pawn Sacrifice and Great Gatsby. In an interview with THR, Maguire discussed what he looks for in future roles, alongside his thoughts on the other iterations of Spider-Man.
“I just don’t really have an ‘I would or wouldn’t do’ mindset. I’ll just do whatever. Whatever it is that comes that I feel called to, that may or may not fit in any kind of box.
I haven’t seen all of them. What I’ve seen, I’ve appreciated. I like both of the actors a ton. I think they’re both super talented. I would just say I appreciated them and I like the actors, I like the choices.”
While it’s a shame that Maguire hasn’t seemed to have checked out Into the Spider-Verse yet, I am glad he continues to go along with his successful career. As he displayed with Pawn Sacrifice, Maguire can still deliver a committed lead performance, as he successfully imbues his character with a strong sense of paranoia throughout in that film. Whether he will be involved in superhero films or not in the future, he will always be fans first neighborhood spider.
