As Captain Marvel continues on track to make a bazillion dollars at the box office, more and more behind-the-scenes tidbits are coming to light. One of the most accessible avenues to some production secrets is concept art. Now, thanks to a new release from one of the artist on the film, we find out that Carol Danvers was not always meant to be a part of StarForce, at least not initially, and the Kree would play more into her earthly background as an Air Force pilot.
Released on artist Aleksi Briclot’s Instagram, we get a very different take on the “Vers” character. Looking very alien and nearly void of her humanity, this visage would have helped solidify the backstory created by the Kree that “Vers” was of Kree decent, and distance her more from her actual human roots.
Another early exploration for Vers (Carol Danvers) as an elite Kree pilot. For Captain Marvel the movie. When I’m doing concept proposals I’m usually trying some iterations close to what we know and we see before about the character but also offering some weirder/fresher/surprising versions. This is certainly one. Here I was trying to hide the human root of the character like it’s looking like an alien and then Tadaaaa! It’s a human face! With Brie Larson features!
Basically this approach is focusing on how to surprise the audience. To play with this and to create mystery. You know there is a lot in common between storytelling and magician tricks (think about Melies who was deeply interested in illusionism before doing cinema).”
This would have been a drastically different look than what we ended up getting. It was pretty cool that this color scheme made a quick appearance during the “changing of the uniform” scene. At the end of the day, the looks we got in the film worked fantastically, so while this may have been cool to see, it was probably for the best not to take her look to the extreme.
