Disney has had quite a few notable live-action remakes over the past few years, but none of them have been as controversial as Aladdin. Early marketing so far, including a teaser debuted during the Grammy’s, has been poorly received, with audiences making a meme out of Will Smith’s Genie and his wonky CGI. It has left many audiences to think that Aladdin could be a surprise failure for Disney.
Despite some negative reactions, Disney is still gearing for a May release for their latest live-action remake. The studio is giving audiences a more extensive look into Aladdin with a new trailer. Check it out along with their official press release:
A thrilling and vibrant live-action adaptation of Disney’s animated classic, “Aladdin” is the exciting tale of the charming street rat Aladdin, the courageous and self-determined Princess Jasmine and the Genie who may be the key to their future. Directed by Guy Ritchie, who brings his singular flair for fast-paced, visceral action to the fictitious port city of Agrabah, “Aladdin” is written by John August and Ritchie based on Disney’s “Aladdin.” The film stars Will Smith as the Genie; Mena Massoud as Aladdin; Naomi Scott as Jasmine; Marwan Kenzari as Jafar; Navid Negahban as the Sultan; Nasim Pedrad as Dalia and Billy Magnussen as Prince Anders.
I have to be honest, this new trailer was a delightful surprise. For the first time, Disney released a trailer that is able to replicate the tone and fun of the original, with director Guy Ritchie’s vision more noticeably on display. It looks like this could be yet another live-action remake success for Disney.
