The Suicide Squad is already shaping up to be quite different from its predecessor. While fans weren’t sure if the film would use certain characters from the original, particularly Will Smith’s Deadshot, it does appear that Deadshot will be in the movie. But not the Will Smith version. Rather, the character will be brought to life by actor Idris Elba.
Idris Elba is now the only official cast member attached to the movie. Although we know Will Smith is no longer involved, it’s unknown if any other cast members from the first Suicide Squad will return or be replaced. This includes Margot Robbie who played Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad.
According to THR, Elba only just barely started meeting with new Suicide Squad director James Gunn about appearing in the movie. Elba was the director’s first choice, and Gunn is already impressing Warner Bros. with his script which is currently titled The Suicide Squad. It really doesn’t sound like a sequel but another interpretation of the source material at that rate.

It’s been reported that Gunn wants to use DC Comics characters who didn’t join Suicide Squad in the first movie. But since he’s using Deadshot, we can assume he’ll still use a few core team members in his new interpretation – most likely Rick Flagg and possibly some version of Harley Quinn.
There’s a lot of potential in a “superhero” team led by DC’s villains and antiheroes. Hopefully James Gunn is the right man to make it work.
