Video game adaptations are the bane of geeks existence, as they often are a poor representation of some of the most iconic video games. Films like Assassins Creed and Need for Speed have displayed this recently, leaving many to be more than weary for an upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog film.
Featuring the likes of Jim Carrey, James Marsden, and Ben Schwartz as the iconic blue hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog is still far off from its November 8, 2019 release, but that doesn’t stop the team involved from giving fans a tease. Check out this first look of Sonic from Polygon’s discovery of leaked images:

Honestly the sonic design isn’t bad, at least in 3D. The render looks good but the 2D artwork looks awful. I do understand how people feel about it when they hate the render included cause I remember how I felt when they first announced it. #sonicmovie #SonicMovie pic.twitter.com/bCfJ6xm1w0

Um…OK then. It’s getting sort of comical at this point just how poorly received early promotional material for this film has been, with each image failing to make this film look very convincing. I can see the challenge from adapting Sonic into a live-action environment, but the early results show that the idea may be improbable to execute. Why not just stick with animation, a platform where Sonic has dashed successfully for decades now?
Sonic’s co-creator even responded:
このソニックの全身ビジュアル見ると頭身とお腹の丸さって大事な気がします。もう少しバランス取れなかったのでしょうかねえ https://t.co/6RpIEsYa12

A rough translation reads:
“I feel that it is important to look at the whole body visual of Sonic and head, body, and stomach. Did you not get a little more balance?”

While the writing on the wall spells doom for the movie, I don’t want to bury the film before its even released. The cast involved is accomplished, with the casting of Schwartz as Sonic being surprisingly spot on. Sonic is a character that if executed well would be a blast to watch on screen with his fast flying movement and bad boy personality. I hope this film is able to reverse the bad video game movie trend.
Sonic the Hedgehog is expected to hit theaters on November 8th, 2019.
