The Marvel Cinematic Universe has mainly only had one weakness since Iron Man created the franchise – Disney had mostly chosen not to go into R-rated territory with their large array of characters. While they started to delve in that area with their original Netflix content like Daredevil or The Punisher, it only led fans to wonder if they would ever begin making R-rated movies like their Fox counterparts. Now that Disney is acquiring Fox, it seems like the answer is they’ll indeed begin producing R-rated content. One character fans have wondered about for a while who fits the R-Rated mold is Blade.
Disney CEO Bob Iger mentioned at last month’s quarterly earnings call that they’d eventually branch into R-rated movies. Deadpool was the only property that Iger specifically mentioned, but it’s likely that Deadpool’s success will lead into the probability of other more mature characters being adapted. This definitely includes Blade, a character featured in some of the most popular Marvel adaptations pre-MCU.
According to a source close to WGTC, Marvel is prepping to revive the Blade franchise with original star Wesley Snipes. It does fit with previous rumors that the actor would be returning to portray the character, and now would be as good a time as any to bring him back. They also reported that the new movie has a completed script, revealing that Blade would now be training his daughter (likely Fallon Grey).
It definitely makes sense, as Blade continues to be one of Marvel’s most popular titles and everyone involved seems to be open about returning. It also makes sense that they’d want to pass the torch onto a new actress and have her lead the franchise into a new direction for the MCU. Hopefully something great comes of this and we can see the Blade franchise come back in full force.
