We’re in a bit of a strange place with the MCU right now, for the first time since 2012, we don’t actually know what the next year will hold. One film which has recently been talked about in the Marvel camp is The Eternals, another cosmic based group who first appeared on the page in 1976. Now, Kevin Feige has commented on the potential film revealing some pretty big information about what we can expect.
The comments from the Marvel Studios Head came via an interview at a recent press day for the upcoming Captain Marvel in which he revealed they were looking at emulating the tactic they took with their other little known property, Guardians of the Galaxy back in 2014.
He explained:
“Everything after Endgame, and after Spider-Man: Far From Home, will be different and be unique, as we try to make every film. But seeing returning characters is certainly something we’re gonna do and want to do. But also introducing characters that the majority of the world has never heard of, much like Guardians, much like Avengers before we made Avengers. And there are lots of them. Eternals are one group, but we like the idea of introducing an ensemble, doing an ensemble movie from the start, as opposed to building up as we did with the first Avengers. More like Guardians, not tonally, but in terms of introducing a new group of people. You were asking about ’60s, and ’70s before. Jack Kirby did an immense, amazing epic with Eternals that spans tens of thousands of years, and that’s also something we haven’t really done, which is why that among many other things post-Endgame, we find appealing.”
It would make sense that The Eternals would differ tonally from the Guardians of The Galaxy films since that is what makes the latter so unique. It’s also interesting that he discusses the fact that the franchise will possibly look to emulate the comics which spans ‘Tens of Thousands‘ of years.
The world of The Eternals has already been touched upon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with both Josh Brolin’s Thanos and his homeworld of Titan being part of the fictional race’s lore. Whether this would appear in The Eternals film remains to be seen.
In the comics, The Eternals are described as being created by The Celestials as an offshoot of the evolutionary process that kick-started life on the planet Earth. Intended to be the defenders of Earth, the group often found themselves up against their evil counterparts, The Deviants.
Hopefully we will find out more about Marvel’s plans for The Eternals and the rest of the MCU’s future plans in the near future.
