Captain Marvel is just over a month away from hitting theaters. As the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first female led film, and the introduction of the most powerful hero in the universe, anticipation for this film is just about on par with the film that follows right behind it, Avengers: Endgame. And, in very typical Marvel fashion, details have been scarce. While we’ve gotten a couple trailers and some plot information, the studio has still been really tight lipped on the true secrets in the movie. But, as with every large production, sometimes someone or something slips up. Two of the biggest leak sources have been the Marvel Legends toy line, and the Disney sites themselves. Noe, we’ve got a possible leak from the marriage of the two.
🚨SPOILER ALERT🚨
“Genis-Vell’s scenes in Captain Marvel”
😲 Excuse me, WUT DID YOU JUST SAY?!?#CaptainMarvel #MarvelLegends pic.twitter.com/9UkhcyEWaR— CollectAndChill (@collectandchill) January 26, 2019
Looking at the Marvel Legends line on the Shop Disney website, we get a look and description of the Genis-Vell figure. Thanks to CollectandChill on Twitter, we see a key statement that could potentially blow the lid of the best kept secret for the movie thus far. It points to the Product Details and a particular sentence.
Recreate Genis-Vell’s scenes from Captain Marvel…
Mind blown. Wow! Could we be seeing this hero-turned-villain, the son of Mar-Vell, making his big screen debut?! If this is true, this is a huge leak. But, let’s reign this in just a bit. If you go to the site now, that line is no longer in the description. So, while Disney may have just fixed an error, the conspiracy theorist in me says “Nay Nay!”. See, Disney has already done this once before, when the site labeled Jude Law’s character as Mar-Vell before quickly changing it and removing the label. So, is that what’s happening now?
Maybe not. You see, if you read further done on every figure, there’s a major difference between the characters in the movie (Captain Marvel, Nick Fury, and Yonn Rogg), and the Legends figures added to fill out the collection (Grey Gargoyle and Genis-Vell). All the figures of characters in the movie say, “Inspired by Captain Marvel”. The other two say, “Part of the Marvel Legends Series”. The second description is on the Genis-Vell figure. This points to him NOT being in the film. Add to that the fact that CollectandChill felt a strange need to watermark their image of the description, and I smell something fishy going on.
Could this user have created this, just in the hopes of going viral? Maybe. To add a watermark, one typically has to put the image into a photo editing software (i.e. Photoshop) and adjust it in some way. But, seems like a weird choice to use to go viral, if it is indeed fake.
At the end of the day, the only way we’ll know for sure is that either this twitter user comes forward and admits to doctoring the photo, or we all wait to see the movie in theaters on March 8th.
