At this point in time, the ‘Will He? Won’t He?’ surrounding Ben Affleck‘s involvement in Matt Reeves upcoming Batman movie has gone around so many times that you could strap a plastic horse on it and start charging people. This time however the merry-go-round has stopped on the ‘Won’t’ side, as the latest rumor has pointed to a fresh face taking on the role in the upcoming film.
The latest rumor comes courtesy of KC Walsh of Geeks WorldWide – who explains that the film will be looking to focus on the Caped Crusader’s early days with a younger actor in the role. Walsh took to Twitter to reveal:
“Getting asked a lot about #TheBatman, hear is what I’ve heard, Reeves is on round 2 with the script working on WBs notes, still aiming for a 2019 production start, set in the past with a new Batman”

It’s long been rumored that Reeves was looking to feature another actor in the role, with the studio apparently looking to still use Affleck in scenes which would book end the main story. This would then allow Reeves to do his own thing – as well as keeping it the established continuity they have created in the DCEU thus far.
If reeves were to reboot the character, this would put Warner Brothers in a difficult spot, as they are looking to move ahead with their established franchise given the previous success of Wonder Woman and what looks to be a future success with Aquaman later this year. It would effectively mean they would need to write the Batman character out of any future appearances – or change Reeves script so it fits in.
This isn’t the first major blow that has come for DC in regards to a major character, with the news earlier this year that Henry Cavill may actually have vacated the role of Superman. Without their two heavy hitters, the DCEU may struggle to succeed.
Until we have official confirmation we can only speculate on what comes next for the franchise. In the meantime, you can check out their next film, Aquaman, when it hits theaters on December 14th.
