Hugh Jackman returning as Wolverine has been on the minds of many Marvel Cinematic Universe fans ever since it was revealed that Disney would be acquiring 20th Century Fox – meaning Marvel Studios could use the character if they wanted to. Despite this, Jackman has stood firm in saying that he’s done with the character, and that Logan would be his last time in the role.
In a recent interview with People, the actor revealed that his stance hasn’t changed when asked about a possible return:
“Oh, Wolverine will be back. Someone’s going to buy him, I don’t know.”
He was then asked about a potential return in a Deadpool crossover, and said:
“No, but Ryan is relentless. He keeps coming back to me in all these ways, shapes and forms. I just said, ‘You know, I just don’t think the world really wants to see Deadpool with Wolverine.’ Maybe a cameo from Deadpool? I just think it runs over it for Deadpool.”
When the interview pointed out how Ryan Reynolds said he could use the career boost, Jackman said:
“Oh, really? That’s nice of him. He’s throwing me a bone? Got it. You know that term, dag, I mentioned? A dag is a goofball in American. It’s a goof. You’re such a dag, Ryan!”
Jackman gave a more detailed response in 2017 when talking about leaving the role for good, saying:
“…for the whole 17 years I kept thinking that would be so great, like I would love to see, particularly, Iron Man and the Hulk and Wolverine together. And every time I saw an Avengers movie I could just see Wolverine in the middle of all of them like punching them all on the head. But it was like, ‘Oh well, that’s not gonna happen,’ and it was interesting just when I first saw that headline — it was just the possibility of it and who knows what’s gonna happen, obviously — I was like, ‘Hang on!’ But I think, unfortunately, the ship has sailed for me, but for someone else I would like to see Wolverine in there.”
He also revealed that there was an exact moment where he knew he’d never be doing it again:
“The moment I had the thought, I was super charged, super excited, absolutely sure I wouldn’t play it again and very nervous, because it’s 17 years.”
So for now, it appears that us ever seeing Hugh Jackman as Wolverine again, even in the MCU, probably isn’t going to happen. Then again, you never know. The right amount of money can make people do a lot of things. Ryan Reynolds continues to campaign for a return as well. We’ll see.
