The Ghostbusters franchise has been erratic over the last couple of decades. After the success of the original film, an animated series titled The Real Ghostbusters quickly went into production. The show focused on developing the characters and elaborating on the universe’s lore. Many kids of the 1980’s grew up with it, and so by the time a proper film sequel titled Ghostbusters II was released in 1989, everyone was a little underwhelmed. That hasn’t stopped people from talking about Ghostbusters 3, however.
As a result, the franchise has never truly recovered, with its creators constantly talking about doing a third film but never seeing it come to fruition. Ghostbusters was eventually remade in 2016, and while it was designed to give new life to the series, it was not a hit with fans or critics.
Now Ghostbusters writer/actor Dan Aykroyd is bringing up the possibility once more of a proper Ghostbusters III. According to Aykroyd, the new film is “being written right now.” He even believes that there is a “possibility of a reunion with the three remaining Ghostbusters”, which would include himself, Murray, and Hudson.
While Bill Murray has been reluctant to return to the franchise before, Aykroyd is optimistic.
“I think Billy will come. The story’s so good. Even if he plays a ghost.”
While a new Ghostbusters film does sound good on paper, I don’t have the highest hopes for a new installment. After all this time, with the remake being their example of what a modern Ghostbusters would look like, it may be time to put the property to rest. Especially if they want to bring Bill Murray back as a ghost.
