Godzilla has been a legendary movie monster for nearly 65 years. Trampling through Tokyo, the King of Monsters has battled on both the side of humanity and against it, in over 30 films. He has battled countless other titanic monsters, such as Mothra, Gigan, and Rodan. But, his most famous battle is with another epic cinematic monster: King Kong. Now, we will see a whole new interpretation of this massive battle in 2020’s Godzilla vs. Kong, part of WB and Legendary’s new MonsterVerse.
As production begins on the epic retelling of the battle that pits two of Hollywood’s biggest icons against one another, we have an official synopsis for the follow-up film to 2014’s Godzilla, 2017’s Kong: Skull Island, and the upcoming 2019 Godzilla: King of Monsters.
“In a time when monsters walk the Earth, humanity’s fight for its future sets Godzilla and Kong on a collision course that will see the two most powerful forces of nature on the planet collide in a spectacular battle for the ages. As Monarch embarks on a perilous mission into uncharted terrain and unearths clues to the Titans’ origins, a human conspiracy threatens to wipe the creatures, both good and bad, from the face of the earth forever.”
The film stars Alexander Skarsgård (“Big Little Lies,” “The Little Drummer Girl”), Millie Bobby Brown (“Stranger Things”), Rebecca Hall (“Christine,” “Professor Marston and the Wonder Women”), Brian Tyree Henry (“Atlanta,” “Widows”), Shun Oguri (“Gintama”), Eiza González(“Baby Driver”), Jessica Henwick (“Iron Fist”), Julian Dennison (“Deadpool 2”), Kyle Chandler(“The Wolf of Wall Street,” “Manchester by the Sea”) and Demián Bichir (“The Nun,” “The Hateful Eight”). Adam Wingard (V/H/S, You’re Next) will be directing this fight from a script written by Terry Rossio (Pirates of the Caribbean).
In the MonsterVerse, Godzilla is a Force of Nature, part of Earth’s defense against the Titans, the monsters that seem to reside inside the planet. At the same time, on Skull Island, Kong is part of an endangered species of gigantic apes that fight against other Titans on the island. As Monarch, a covert company meant to study these monsters and keep them a secret, searches for more answers to the origins of the Titans, they seem to inadvertently put the two best allies in the fight against one another.
With all the positive feedback (mixed with some negative) revolving around the upcoming King of Monsters in 2019, we’re sure this battle will be a whole new epic for the current generation to enjoy.
