Grudge isn’t out until June, but that didn’t stop Sony from recently screening it for a test audience. Test screenings aren’t the final product, as Halloween had what was called a “disastrous” test screening, but then was universally praised by critics and fans alike upon its release. With that being said, the first reactions to the Grudge test screening aren’t very good.
The news comes from Mr. H reviews, and a basic summary of the information that his source gave him about the screening, said:
- This film will take place in the United States.
- It’s not scary and relies on generic jump scares. Comparisons were made to Lights Out.
- The film has three subplots: A family living in a haunted house, detectives on a murder case, and realtors attempting to sell the house.
- The end is abrupt, suggesting producers expect sequels to follow.
- Reasons for key plot points and motivations of important characters are not explained.
It’s worth pointing out that the source said some people in the audience liked the film, while others thought it was “meh”. Some of the comments on Mr. H’s video give you an idea of what fans generally think of this reboot idea:
- I remember the first one scared me, I couldn’t sleep alone because I worried some black haired woman making that groaning sound would come under the blanket and drag me off.
- I’m not surprised, Hollywood doesn’t know how to make horror movie’s now without jump scares. All thought i loved Halloween 2018.
- Why am I thinking that with the financial success of Halloween 2018, that we’re going to get saddled with years of average or shit remakes/reboots of classic horror films?
It’s also worth pointing out that Insidious actress Lin Shaye has said the movie is the scariest one that she’s ever been a part of.
Grudge will be released on June 21st, 2019.
