Wes Craven may have not had the most consistent of careers (one of his last film’s My Soul to Take is still one of the worst horror movies of the decade), he is worth celebrating for the notable impact made in the slasher genre with Scream and the A Nightmare on Elm Street franchises. Both films took wildly unique approaches to the slasher genre and its respective cliches, with Craven creating two iconic franchises in the process. While there has been talks recently of a Nightmare on Elm Street remake, the late director is in the news again for a surprisingly obscure movie, in Cursed.
After Craven’s success with Scream, he re-teamed with Bob and Harvey Weinstein to make Cursed. Craven eventually left the project, with drastic reshoots occurring after his departure.
Cursed was a major failure both commercially and critically (17% rating on Rotten Tomatoes), but it appears that Craven’s original version could resurrect the film’s fleeting legacy. In sit-down with BloodyDisgusting, former Dimension COO Cary Granat discussed why Craven’s vision should see the light of day.
“Yes, yes, yes, 100! It still exists. I just don’t know if it went with The Weinstein Company. I left in 2000 to start Walden so it was in development after that.”
With Granat also noting that the original cast would be corporative, it seems possible that we could see Craven’s original vision in the near future. It’d be interesting to see just how different Craven’s cut would have been, and the movie that we may have missed out on. Only time will tell, however. If there’s a big demand for it, we’ll probably see it.
