It’s not news to anyone that the Terminator franchise is in a state of disarray. The last revival of the series Terminator: Genysis was a commercial and critical failure, leaving Paramount having to go back to square one in any hopes for reviving the famed science fiction franchise. With it being nearly 30 years since the last good Terminator film, fans are starting to wonder whether the franchise should just die off or not.
Whether fans want it or not, another reboot is coming, and it will be coming sooner than previously thought. The currently untitled Terminator reboot was original slated for a November 22nd, 2019 release, but it’s now moving up to November 2nd, 2019. This news comes after Wonder Woman: 1984 moving to June 2020, clearing up one of the year’s biggest release dates.
Whether this Terminator reboot will make a profit or not is yet to be seen, but I do have more confidence in this attempt than previous ones. James Cameron has ensured fans that this will be a direct sequel to Terminator 2: Judgement Day, with the reunion of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton being a noteworthy selling point. As shown with Halloween, sometimes all a series needs is to come back to its roots in order to reset itself.
Perhaps the most exciting news about this sequel is the inclusion of director Tim Miller. Unlike past Terminator entries that had more safe director choices, Miller has shown with Deadpool that he is a capable action director, so I hope he can bring a fresh perspective to this franchise, because let’s face it, Terminator desperately needs that.
