Since the release of The Exorcist in 1973 there has been more than a healthy amount of possession and exorcism movies flooding the horror scene. Over recent years it has seemed that many movies that fit this particular sub-genre have been a retelling of the same, overdone story. Not to say the movies have been terrible, they just haven’t been special. A new exorcism movie is on the way, and judging by the trailer, there’s a chance it might breathe some fresh life into the overcrowded sub-genre. Watch the trailer for The Possession of Hannah Grace below:
The movie will follow Megan Reed, a police officer that recently got out of rehab and took a job working nights in a morgue. Upon the arrival of a new body she is informed that the person died halfway through being exorcised. She is then told that it is said if someone dies midway through an exorcism the entity remains, to find a new vessel. Reed doesn’t let that phase her, but by the looks of things she should have. Bizarre and violent things start happening at the hand of the entity within the corpse.
This movie certainly looks like it is a step in the right direction for possession movies. Although it is clear from the trailer that it will include the body horror that is typical of the genre, the storyline looks like it could take the movie to another level. The Possession of Hannah Grace certainly has heaps of potential but we will just have to wait and see whether it can deliver.
Directed by Diederik Van Rooijen and written by Brian Sieve, the movie stars Shay Mitchell as our lead, Megan Reed. Acting alongside her will be Kirby Johnson as the unfortunate Hannah Grace.
Although you might expect this movie to have an October release in time for Halloween, it won’t be released until November 30th. The decision for a November release date may well be to avoid the competition of the upcoming Halloween sequel, and perhaps that was a wise move from the studio.
