There seems to be an endless litany of fan theories when it comes to the still untitled Avengers 4, mainly because fans are dying for answers to so many questions left behind after the shocking ending of Infinity War. When you have such an ambitious project such as the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a ten year long connected film universe that spans over 20 films, several television shows, and containing beloved and iconic characters with decades of comic book history, a detailed plan had to be laid in place.
Fans realize this, and have been scouring deep for these underlying threads to find the answers they seek. One fan on Reddit may have found such a thread. One that will give a certain original Avenger a proper way to end his time in the MCU.
User Crossfityah posted an interesting theory that could explains how Chris Evans’ Captain America makes his exit from the MCU in the most Cap way possible.
Avengers 4 Prediction: Thanos being damaged by the Gauntlet only happened to foreshadow Cap’s death. from r/marvelstudios
Now, this theory is more so a prediction, but it has some credence in the MCU. Cap has always been willing to sacrifice himself to save humanity, as evident by the ending of his first solo film, as well as in The Winter Soldier, when he told Maria Hill to activate the Hydra Helicarriers to shoot on themselves, even though he wasn’t clear yet.
How about in Age of Ultron, when he would rather die with the people of Sokovia, than leave anyone behind? And this goes beyond the super powered Captain America. Steve Rogers, as a man, has always been willing to give his life to save others. Just look when he jumped on what he thought was a live grenade to save the people around him during his Basic Training, BEFORE he was given the Super Soldier Serum.
There is also a nod to this being a possibility in Infinity War. Thor makes a bit of an offhand comment when with the Guardians, talking about how the weapons of Nidavellir would kill mere mortals who try to wield them. Cap is no ‘mere mortal’, but is not at Asgardian levels, so he could possibly wield it temporarily before it took his life.
In the end, this would be a tear-jerking but epically fitting way for Captain America to say his farewell from the MCU, as Chris Evans’ contract is up after this film, and he will be reportedly done with the character.
