We’re finally getting a trailer for the oft delayed and much maligned X-Men: Dark Phoenix, which, along with the upcoming (and also in flux) New Mutants film, will be the end of this iteration of Marvel’s mutants in cinema. Disney CEO, Bob Iger, has already confirmed that Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios will be taking over the iconic team once the Fox merger is completed, so we all expect a sort of reboot to bring the X-Men into the Marvel Cinematic Universe fold.
Before that happens, however, we’re getting a take on one of the X-Men’s greatest stories, the Dark Phoenix Saga.
Set in the 90’s, the film focuses on Jean Grey dealing with a newly found overabundance of power, after she is hit with some sort of cosmic energy during a space rescue. Lots of familiar faces are set to return, like Magneto (in a still ambiguous style role, stradling the line of hero and villain), Professor X, Mystique, Cyclops, Quicksilver, NightCrawler, Beast, and more, as well as new faces, like Jessica Chastain’s mysterious villain role.
Rumors point to the Skrulls being involved, hoping to use the Phoenix Force, and by extension Jean, as a weapon for their own nefarious purposes.
This film is in a weird place in cinema, as it really doesn’t matter whether its good or not. If it does great, then the series goes out on a high note and makes Disney a ton of money. If it bombs, Disney doesn’t care at all and it makes no difference, as this is it for the series regardless.
Hopefully, Fox learned their lesson from their first attempt at this story in The Last Stand, and can leave fans on a positive upswing heading into the MCU reboot. Marvel will more than likely not tread on troubled waters a third time, so this is probably the last time this epic storyline will been seen on the big screen.
