The first trailer for X-Men: Dark Phoenix has officially been released, and there’s a lot to take in with this film. In what seems like a reshoot of the abysmal X3: Last Stand, asFox has taken another shot at the Dark Phoenix Saga storyline. But, along with that, they’ve shoved in a major character death (the lazy writing way to create tension in a team), a stereotypical character jump to the other side, forced in a whole other storyline in Genosha (the mutant island haven founded by Magneto), and a mysterious villain who looks to turn a mutant against their own kind to show they don’t belong (like almost every other non mutant villain in these movies).
Oh, and Magneto is trying to live in peace, but then becomes a bad guy… again. But, the thing that stuck out the most, like a sore thumb with a gangrene infection, was the abominable uniforms the X-Men are wearing!
Love that they took costume inspiration from Grant Morrison’s #XMen run for #DarkPhoenix.#TheNerdieBunch #KeepltNerdie pic.twitter.com/hgSUkbFBdq

What is supposed to be a take on the X Suits from Grant Morrison’s excellent run on the Astonishing X-Men comic books, these costumes look like the Art Department went to Wal-Mart the day after Halloween and bought a bunch of costumes on sale. The ‘tights’ are ill fitting pleather jumpsuits and the massive yellow ‘X’s’ look like someone’s mom hastily cut them out of felt for an elementary school play she forgot she volunteered for at the beginning of the school year.
It’s things like this that make me excited to see the X-Men heading into the proper hands of Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios.
After the horrid X-Men: Apocalypse, many fans had very little hope for this film, but this was an opportunity for Fox to redeem themselves with what is the last movie in this franchise. Instead, it looks like they’re going to go out with a complete fizzle, horrible costumes and all. At least we know that this will be the last time we have to be subjected to this monstrosity, as 2019 will see the completion of the Disney/Fox merger, and the X-Men return home to the rightful hands to deal with them properly.
