While Jim Wynorski’s 1986 film Chopping Mall has become a cult classic since its original release, it seems like there’s no better time than now to be a fan. The cheesy robot-focused slasher flick had its first Blu-ray release in 2016, as part of Lionsgate’s Vestron Video Collector’s Series. Then, earlier this year, the film’s original director publicly denounced any possibilities for a remake; meaning the film’s legacy was protected from any disrespectful cash-ins.
Now it seems fans of this nostalgic outing can be pleased to know Wynorski is working on a sequel – one that returns to the mall in the form of a 12-episode miniseries. According to Wynorski’s Facebook posts, the series will be told in real time with each episode representing one hour from 7 PM to 7 AM. The reveal that a series will soon go into production certainly came as a surprise – but a very welcomed one, especially after the idea of a disrespectful remake left hardcore fans with a sour taste.
While there’s nothing currently known about the story, Wynorski did mention a few actors and actresses in one of his posts. As he stated,
These are all names of cast members from the original film and it’ll be such a delight if they all come back to do this sequel series. It honestly seems surreal and every bit of the development is making this Chopping Mall fan smile wide. Hopefully we learn more about the series soon, and both when and where to expect it. As long as it ends up on a channel that won’t be afraid to have a few heads blown up with lasers, what’s to lose?
In the original 1986 film…
Three malfunctioning security droids terrorise a group of teenagers locked inside a shopping mall.
There’s certainly a lot of room for modernization in 2018, especially with the concept of smart technology and how much we rely on machines now more than ever. It’ll be a real treat to see the Killbots again and what they’re capable of now.
