James Gunn‘s firing from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was perhaps the most controversial that Disney has made in running the MCU. Gunn was easily the most talented and distinct craftsman on the MCU roster of directors, with his signature comedic style and visceral eye creating two of fans favorite Marvel movies. With Gunn gone, Guardians Vol. 3 is in a state of limbo . With Disney trying to line-up a new director and decide whether or not a third volume will actually happen, the cast has been put into an awkward situation and apparently, it could effect Avengers 4.
Star Dave Bautista recently spoke out about this uneasiness and how it could ultimately effect Avengers 4:
“It’s kind of a strange situation to be in now where we’ve lost our director for Guardians. Guardians 3 is really up in the air and I don’t know what they’re going to do with it. It’s on permanent hold for now, and that may make a difference in what they do with our characters in Avengers 4. To be honest with you, right now I really don’t know. But I know I’m in Avengers 4. I’ve shot most of it already. I do have two days of reshoots. But other than that, I have some really great scenes that I hope they use. But I guess that it remains to be seen what they’ll do with the characters.”
Bautista has been very vocal throughout this process, being Gunn’s most passionate supporter and Disney’s biggest critic. Not only do I admire his loyalty to his friend, but also respect his open skepticism about Disney’s handling of the matter. Considering the fact that he’s risking his career to do this, it says a lot about Bautista’s character.
As far as Avengers 4 goes, this is troubling news. The Guardians themselves are the highlight in any movie they are in, often stealing scenes with their great banter and affectionate family dynamic. If Avengers 4 is the last we get to see these actors playing these characters, it would be a pretty depressing conclusion.
