Avengers: Infinity War definitely lived up to its high expectations that were set by MCU fans when it was released this past April. It left us with a cliffhanger ending that has had people talking since they saw it, which is obviously smart on the part of Marvel Studios, as now everyone can’t wait to see what happens in Avengers 4. It turns out, however, that the film could have been even better – as far as humorous cameos are concerned.
It turns out that none other than Howard the Duck was set to appear in the film – but was ultimately cut. Co-Director Anthony Russo recently revealed:
“Howard the Duck was in one draft of the script. Howard the Duck actually had a really good scene… we were going to cameo with [The Hangover and Community star] Ken Jeong, with Howard the Duck. That was a much-beloved scene by us but it just didn’t end up fitting at all.”
Joe Russo even teased what it would have been like:
“Yeah, it was [Peter] Quill trying to track down some information from Howard the Duck on some outlier planet and interrupting him during a poker game.”
The directors enjoyed the scene, but ultimately had to cut it out:
“So there were lots of ideas and iterations that were on the floor for this one but I think we would end up in the correct place. It’s all a process. Sometimes you are actually just writing a bible to the universe of what that movie is and have to pare it down to what the actual narrative is.”
The character famously first appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy, but before that, all we had was an awful movie from George Lucas – that has actually gained cult status over time.
For anyone who was wondering, it’s worth pointing out that Howard the Duck survived Thanos’ snap.
