Thor had a key part in Avengers: Infinity War, and it’s now been revealed that it could have been much different. Since the film has been released to digital and is set to be released on Blu-ray/DVD next week, a lot of behind the scenes stuff including deleted scenes and alternate storylines are starting to surface. One very interesting one is Thor’s alternate quest for the stormbreaker that almost brought a dead Marvel Cinematic Universe character back to life – but was ultimately not used.
In a recent interview, co-director Joe Russo said:
“We explored a lot of different ideas of where Thor could go for that weapon. We even had versions of the story at one time where he was going to visit this sort of ghost of his dead grandfather – which was one version we were playing with that we didn’t end up using. I am happy where we had settled.”
He added:
“[Thor] really goes on kind of like a classic heroes’ journey. We wanted to create the feeling in the film that Thor was actually going to save the day. So him going to get this weapon that could kill Thanos was a critical part of the story and we had to give a lot of screen time and a lot of strong dramatic interest because we really wanted people invested in that – so that they would be coming into the climax of the film with that feeling.”
It’s pretty interesting, as seeing Thor’s dead grandfather, Bor, would have been a lot for the character to take in, especially after he already witnessed the death of his father Odin, and his brother Loki. We last saw the character in Thor: The Dark World, so it would have been an unexpected return – similar to Red Skull making an appearance in the film.
Who knows what characters Marvel will bring back next, but we will know for sure when the currently untitled Avengers 4 film hits theaters next year on May 3rd (or an earlier date that hasn’t officially been confirmed) next year.
