Back in March, the internet was disappointed to hear that Donald Glover and Stephen Glover’s animated Deadpool series was no longer in production at FX. At the time the reason given was the classic ‘Creative Differences’ between the Atlanta creators and the network, however a recent comment from CEO John Landgraf has revealed there may have been more to the story than meets the eye as well as inspiring some hope that we may still see the series one day.
Whilst fielding questions at the Television Critics Association summer press tour, Landgraf briefly touched upon the series when asked about a potential revival of the series. He told the crowd.
“I think that Marvel will revive it, because they have the rights. They own the IP and they have the rights to do an animated adult series based on any of the X-Men characters, and based on Deadpool specifically. They didn’t want to do the show that Donald and Stephen [Glover] wrote. We would have done show that Donald and Stephen wrote, but it wasn’t our decision. When Marvel decided not to do that show, we parted company with them as did Donald and Stephen. Now it’s totally up to them [Marvel] whether they hire someone else to do a different show.”
It’s interesting to see that it was Marvel who decided to axe the previous series, seeing as at the time it was largely believed that it was FX who made the decision based on the fact that production hadn’t actually started despite it having a release date of later this year. At the time the elder Glover released a spec script to give us an idea of how the series may have looked been, which was well received by those who viewed it before the actor purged all traces of the show from his Twitter.
Given the popularity of the character and how well he would translate to an R-Rated animated series, Marvel would be crazy not to want to develop a show like this. Given that it is now confirmed that the character and his fellow mutants are going to be owned by Disney, it could be that the series will find a home on Disney’s upcoming streaming service although only time will tell.
