The Godzilla franchise has seen something of a resurgence in recent years. While the 2014 reboot from Legendary Pictures wasn’t completely well-received, it did strongly enough for the company to move forward with their newly-established MonsterVerse. In 2017 they followed up Godzilla in their prequel titled Kong: Skull Island. The King Kong reboot was significantly more successful with Kaiju fans – putting faith in us all for Godzilla: King of the Monsters.
Now Warner Bros. has premiered the trailer at Comic-Con; and it’s everything that a Godzilla fan could hope to see. Trick ‘r Treat director Michael Dougherty is at the helm of this new installment, and he’s bringing a host of classic monsters to the big screen. Now we’re not only looking forward to Godzilla – but Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah. Wow!
Here they are – The Big 4:

This Mothra reveal coupled with Clair de Lune gave me shivers. Such a good trailer. #GodzillaKingOfTheMonsters pic.twitter.com/rzXPXXaJA2

If this is the larval Mothra I’m looking at, I like it. (Blink and you miss a bunch of little crawly legs in that shot.) #GodzillaKingOfTheMonsters pic.twitter.com/1mBraInVuY

Aside from Godzilla, however, most of the other monsters are shrouded in secrecy. King Ghidorah is kept especially ominous and menacing – shown only inside either ice or fog. But it’s clear they’re staying truthful to his horrific three-headed form. And that’s more than exciting.
Mothra is shown as beautifully as any Kaiju fan could expect. Her larvae form is rather innocent, and should remind viewers that she’s definitely humanity’s real protector. We also get a majestic scene of Mothra stretching her wings out from behind a waterfall.
Rodan is a pretty menacing character as well. He seems to be picking up the pace since his older appearances, and really shows it. There’s a cool shot of the winged beast flying from a volcano – and endless clips of destruction caused by his tremendous power. While Ghidorah is likely being saved for the finale, Rodan is sure to give Godzilla a run for his money for the first portion.
Either way all of these monsters look fantastic. How Godzilla will interact with all of them is yet to be seen – but hopefully it’s everything we could hope for. At least until 2020’s Godzilla vs. Kong.
“When these ancient super-species—thought to be mere myths—rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.”
The film stars Zhang Ziyi, Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga, Millie Bobby Brown, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Bradley Whitford, Ken Watanabe, Thomas Middleditch, Charles Dance and Aisha Hinds.
