Jodie Whittaker will be coming to our screens this autumn as the first female to play the role of The Doctor in Season 11 of Doctor Who. We now get our first look at the new season as the BBC have released the first official teaser trailer. The short video gives us a glimpse at the Time Lord’s three new companions. You can watch it below:
Fans may have noticed a couple of references in this trailer to the eleventh Doctor, played by Matt Smith. First, we see Ryan, played by Tosin Cole sitting in a cafe. After sensing The Doctor he turns around to notice someone eating fish fingers and custard. This is the meal that The Doctor ate with companion Amelia Pond the first time he met her, in the season five premiere episode after crash landing the TARDIS outside her house.
The second Matt Smith reference comes in the form of a Beano comic. Graham, played by Bradley Walsh is reading a newspaper at a counter, he turns around after sensing the presence of The Doctor and when he turns back he is holding a copy of the Beano Summer Special from 1981. This is the same issue that Matt Smith’s Doctor was reading in the season seven episode, The Rings of Akhaten.
Alongside Whittaker as the thirteenth Doctor will be three companions. Bradley Walsh as Graham, Tosin Cole as Ryan and Mandip Gill as Yasmin. Sharon D. Clarke will join the cast in a recurring role as Graham’s wife. Taking over from Steven Moffat as head writer and executive producer for the series is Chris Chibnall.
