Ant-Man and The Wasp is currently Number 1 in the theaters, making it 20 for 20 with Marvel movies taking the number one spot on opening weekend. Now we’ve only got 2 films left in the MCU’s Phase 3, and they are sure to pack a major punch for fans going into Phase 4. The Ant-Man sequel was a fun and lighter tone to help deal with some of the emotional turmoil left from Avengers: Infinity War, but it, too, had its major impact – and that impact could play a big part in Avengers 4.
*SPOILERS AHEAD FOR ‘ANT-MAN AND THE WASP’! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!*
In the mid-credits scene of the film, we saw Scott Lang trapped in the Quantum Realm after Thanos’ snap wiped out Hank Pym and Hope & Janet Van Dyne (along with half of all life in the entire universe). Now, being trapped in the Quantum Realm may have protected Lang from the snap, or he may have just been part of the half that randomly survived, but either way, he now has to find a way out.
An important note is from something that Janet warned Scott about before he went in. She told him to avoid Time Vortexes while in the Quantum Realm. This almost throwaway line could actually be the key to not only getting Scott out, but to stopping Thanos. Lang could possibly use one of these vortexes to travel back to before Thanos collects all of the Infinity Stones and gather help to stop him.
With some leaked behind the scenes stuff for Avengers 4 showing Lang back at the Battle of New York, the Quantum Realm may very well be how they travel back in time.
Another point from this film that points to how the Quantum Realm could possibly be the key is Janet Van Dyne herself. During her 30 years trapped in the Quantum Realm, Janet “evolved” some new Quantum based abilities, including the ability to heal people on a subatomic level. But, to expand a bit on this further, let us look to an actual Mathematical Physicist from CalTech named Spyridon Michalakis, who was a guest contributor for The Wrap, in which he explained the infinite potential within the Quantum Realm.
“The Quantum Realm is a place where almost everything is possible. If you know how to navigate it by mastering quantum entanglement (don’t ask, unless you are willing to take me out to a fancy dinner), you can engineer reality to manifest itself to your liking, just like a computer programmer can write code that allows you to experience being a soldier in virtual reality, fighting unicorns with lasers during the First World War. Space and Time are dimensions that emerge from a soup of pure possibilities, the Quantum Realm. The laws of physics themselves are merely suggestions within the Quantum Realm, only taking a more definite form as we “zoom out” from that place of infinite possibilities, to find ourselves in the macroscopic world we call home.”
This scientific reasoning could very well have Janet on par with a Dr. Manhattan from The Watchmen, at least in reality bending abilities. She could potentially bring herself back from the dust, as well as help bring others back.
All in all, only time and the still untitled Avengers 4 will tell how all of this will actually play out, but at least we are getting some real scientific intel into the possibilities.
