Avengers: Infinity War left an MCU devastated with the deaths of some of fandom’s favorite characters. Spider-Man, Black Panther, Doctor Strange, Star-Lord, Drax, and so many more disintegrated into nothingness with the snap of Thanos’ fingers (although, Drax may just be standing completely still again, harnessing his new found invisibility skill). And, regardless of your religious beliefs, in the MCU, all characters have souls. So, where did those souls go? What will happen in Avengers 4?
Well, according to a theory by Webhead, they may have all inhabited the Soul Stone, and they may, in turn, actually be Thanos’ downfall. This would make some sense, as we saw Gamora’s soul inside the stone after her sacrifice at the hands of her adopted father. Considering the near unlimited power the Soul Stone possesses, and as it is truly the hardest stone to acquire, it could very well house all the souls it helped to wipe out when Thanos “balanced” the universe.
And this could be how the heroes finally triumph over the Mad Titan in the still yet-to-be-titled Avengers 4. Think about a kind of 1980’s Secret War style idea, where all these heroes, and others, are sent to this Soul Dimension, for lack of a better term, and band together to escape as well as take out Thanos. Certainly, with their combined forces, including the knowledge that Doctor Strange has with multiple dimensions and possible futures, they could find a way to defeat him from within.
Webhead also poses another idea. It might be a mental attack, rather than a physical one. We saw an emotional Thanos sacrifice the one being in the universe that he actually loved, Gamora. She, whilst trapped in the Soul Stone, could very well break him down mentally from inside the stone, demoralizing and debilitating him beyond repair.
As with all other rumors with this film, we will just have to wait and see who’s right and who’s wrong in May of 2019 when Avengers 4 finally hits theaters, and closes the book on Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
