One of the biggest mysteries of modern day cinema has got to be the enduring popularity of Michael Bay’s Transformers series. They’re loud, brash and appeal to the lowest form of intelligence…Okay, I get it now. Given that this formula has done them well over the past decade, it’s interesting that the new trailer for the Bumblebee spin-off appears to be taking a different approach.
The trailer was released earlier today and gives us a look at what the Autobot was up to during the eighties. Interestingly, the trailer gives the impression that this film will be a much smaller film than its predecessors, focusing more on the friendship between lovable VW Beetle and Hailey Steinfeld’s Charlie Watson after she finds him in a scrapyard.
Check it out below.
Throughout the rest of the trailer, we are shown brief shots of the Autobot in action running through the forest, a look at John Cena‘s military character and what looks like a much more accurate take on the Decepticon, Starscream. You can also check out the first poster for the film below as well.

Whilst the film may be seen by many as being an unnecessary entry into an increasingly unnecessary franchise, the fact that this doesn’t look like another film more concerned with explosions than story may actually make it a breath of fresh air. At the very least, the fact that it retains some of the classic appearances from that era of the animation means it should be slightly better received than last year’s Transformers: The Last Knight.
Bumblebee is set to hit theatres December 21st putting it in direct competition with Aquaman and Alita: Battle Angel, so we will need to see how well the spin-off fairs.
