Before Avengers: Infinity War hit theaters, there were many Marvel Characters that were in limbo about if they would or would not be in the film. When the movie finally aired we were able to put an answer to many of those questions, except for Adam Warlock, who did not appear, which left fans asking if he would be in Avengers 4 next year. Turns out that is not the case, and those Warlock fans will have to wait just a little longer to see their hero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The Russo brothers have been making press rounds since Infinity War and spoke up to the possibility of Adam Warlock showing in Avengers 4. However, Joe Russo was very clear that he will not show up in the film, but they have their reasons.
“Yeah [Adam Warlock]’s not showing up in our stories. Look, our job as we said a million times is to tell the story of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, not to do direct adaptations of the comics because we’re comic book fans. I have no interest as a director in telling a story that’s already been told or in seeing one that’s already been told. If I know all the events story as they’re going to happen then what’s the point of going to the film? We want to keep surprising audiences and continue the story that started with Iron Man […] a decade ago.”
We know that the character will be a part of an MCU film at some point but even though he was a major part of the Marvel Comics Infinity Gauntlet series, the Russo brothers were telling their own story and not pulling directly from the comics for everything.
We did see a post-credit scene in the James Gunn directed Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 that gave hints towards Adam Warlock showing up soon – but there is no timeline that makes sense as to when he may appear at this point. James Gunn took to his Twitter to explain that the post-credit scene was just a tease, and there are also no plans for the character to appear in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3:
“And despite so many people thinking Adam will show up in Vol 3 that is something that we have never confirmed. Who knows how long it will take him to bake in that cocoon. That said, I love Adam. But the time must be right.”
Originally the character was a part of Infinity War but was taken out and cut from the film – which left the door open for Doctor Strange to somewhat fill a similar role. With Phase 4, we may see Adam Warlock but there is no indication as to when or what film Warlock will be part of at this point. There is lots of life left in the MCU, so it will come – just keep waiting patiently.
