Avengers: Infinity War certainly had a lot of people talking and a lot of theories finding their way to the internet. One such theory which made the rounds last week has now seemingly been confirmed by one of the film’s directors. Read on to find out more – but beware, there may be spoilers.
The theory in question involves the scene just after that fateful finger snap that left us and our heroes devastated. After the scene, Thanos wakes up in a strange location bathed in an orange glow where he finds his adopted daughter Gamora, who asks the Mad Titan what it cost him to achieve his goal.
The prevailing theory was that this scene actually took place inside the Soul Stone, due to the color of the scene and the presence of Gamora, who Thanos needed to sacrifice to acquire the Stone earlier in the film. In a recent Q&A, Joe Russo has confirmed the theory after being asked about the scene.
He explained:
“Yeah it’s- it’s implied it’s the soul stone. It’s all orange around, then he’s inside the stone with the amount of power that it took to snap his fingers- he has this out of body experience with Gamora.
So she’s there?
She is in fact, yes. It was an attempt on our part – because we don’t like two-dimensional roles or three-dimensional villains – every villain is a hero in their own story and as insane and psychotic and brutal and violent as Thanos is, he’s a more complex villain if you go on a journey with him emotionally. He does care about things and it is complicated for him to execute his plan and it cost him something.
He said at the end “It cost him everything” and that it was the only thing he loved which was Gamora which is why we put him back with her at the end. I just want to reiterate with the audience that he does feel true emotion even though he is a monster.”
Many fans have now taken this to mean that Gamora may in fact be able to return, given that her spirit remains inside the stone. Many assumed that the only characters who disappeared due to the snap would be likely to return once the act was reversed.
We will need to wait until next year now to see just what this scene actually means, but in the meantime, you can check it out again in Avengers: Infinity War which is in theaters now.
