It has been 5 long years since Pacific Rim (directed by Guillermo del Toro) brought brilliance to our screen and finally we have the sequel, Pacific Rim: Uprising. The director of Uprising, Steven S. DeKnight, was the showrunner (executive Producer) of Season 1 of the Netflix series, Marvel’s Daredevil. Uprising also has a stand up cast with the son of Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba), Jake Pentecost being played by John Boyega, Rinko Kikuchi playing Mako Mori and Dr. Hermann Gottlieb (Burn Gorman ) and Dr. Newton Geiszler (Charlie Day ) appearing once again. With the great cast and the director having worked on one of the first Marvel Netflix series, that also happened to blow people away, it is no wonder that this film was long awaited.
When we find a director that has worked on one or more fantastic series or films such as DeKnight has, we often see little tributes to other projects of theirs, and in this case, Daredevil has its own little reference in Uprising! One of the very things that people remember about Daredevil are Matt Murdock’s red tinted glasses. They are a staple on his face and Dr. Newton Geiszler has found himself wearing a similar looking pair in the first part of Uprising. Unfortunately, we see those glasses get broken in the elevator fight scene where him and Dr. Hermann Gottlieb take out a few ‘badguys’.

Charlie Day has nothing but good to say about DeKnight in his Screen Rant interview and explains that with fans undoubtedly going to throw the new director shade for taking his own approach to the film, he still did what was in his head regardless of the risk.
“It’s almost a thankless job to take, right? To follow in the footsteps of Guillermo del Toro, people are just gonna come after you. But he really took this movie and he did the movie he wanted to do and there’s a huge risk in that because people will say, ‘Well, you have to do exactly what Guillermo did or you have to honor it’ and he would not have been successful in doing that. He was only able to make his version of this and he never wavered in that.”
So, with a new take on the film, some cool red shades, some loyal cast members and a movie that shows a lot of tough guys taking on a lot of tough things leaves fans mostly happy and excited for Pacific Rim: Uprising.
