When creating a villain or even a hero, the writers, directors, actors and actresses themselves, look deep into their hearts and pull pieces of their favorites to bring their character to life. In the case of Thanos, the bad-ass villain in Avengers: Infinity War who is threatening the life of everyone and everything stopping him from collecting all 6 Infinity Stones – he’s now been compared to one of the greatest villains of all time.
The co-directors for the film, are known as the Russo brother’s aka Joe and Anthony, and have once again used Star Wars‘ Darth Vader as a comparison to Thanos. Although the comparison is quite extreme and the two come from very different universes and battle paths, it seems that the Russo brothers hold Thanos on a higher thread. According to Joe Russo in a recent interview, he thinks Thanos out does Vader:
“If you took Darth Vader and you multiply him times 10… look, our job with Thanos is to make him the preeminent villain in the Marvel Universe. That is his role in the comics. That’s his role in these movies. And in order to be a preeminent villain you have to do some pretty bad things.”
I believe Vader did some pretty bad things in his time within the Star Wars films, so what type of “things” are we exactly looking at for Thanos? For the brothers to create a character 10 times worse then one of the most well-known villains out there, they would have to reach into some extremely dark places and bring us some of the most sadistic crimes out there. Not sure if this Marvel movie really could bring us what they are promising.
With Joe’s explanation about how evil their character will be, Anthony allows for more of a journey explanation.
“Well this movie is sort of [triggered] by Thanos’ decision and an opportunity for him to make a very aggressive move for the stones. More so than he has at any point in the past. A more effective move for the stones than he has in the past. So when Thanos decides to do it, he really goes for it. And he’s kind of one step ahead of our heroes through the movie. And he puts them through a lot of pain.”
Regardless of if they bring us Darth Vader times ten or if Thanos is just in a whole league of his own, it will be no surprise that he will be remembered as extremely evil and encased in fame forever for all fans out there.
Avengers: Infinity War is set to release April 27th and Avengers 4 is set to release May 2019.
