Recent years have seen an explosion of ‘Shipping’, no, not the act of transporting items from one location to another, the exercise of pairing up fictional characters who fans believe should be together. One of the most popular franchises to feature this is definitely Star Wars, most notably the character of Rey, portrayed by Daisy Ridley. Fans initially paired her up with John Boyega’s Finn, but more recently the former Stormtrooper has been replaced by Adam Driver’s Kylo Ren as the object of her affection. Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson has now spoken out about the couple, dubbed Reylo, even going so far as to discuss a potential sex scene.
During a recent panel to promote the film hitting video on demand, Johnson commented on the scene in which the two characters share a powerful moment when they touch fingers in the film, and the deeper meaning behind it. He told the audience.
“One of my favorite shots of the movie, is those two fingers touching. That’s the closest thing we’ll get to a sex scene in a Star Wars movie.”
Something which fellow panel member, Mark Hamill, seemed to take issue with – adding:
“I didn’t even get that.”
It definitely sounds as though this relationship is the direction that Johnson was intending for the characters, something which surely please a large portion of Tumblr. I know one fan from Hungary who will be disappointed that they aren’t going with Kylux (Kylo Ren and General Hux) won’t be going ahead, but at least this tree’s up Finn for Rose, or Poe, if they choose to incorporate the fan-favorite ‘Ship’.
Of course, it’s hard to say whether this arc will be continued in next year’s Star Wars: Episode IX. It does seem to be that there is a distinct lack of communication in regards to the story between films, so J.J. Abrams may have his own plan in mind. Of course if you do desperately want to see Rey and Kylo, or Rey and a few people for that matter, get it on, you could always check out Star Wars: The Force Awakens – A XXX Parody.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi is set to hit VOD now whilst the home media release is set for March 27th. Star Wars: Episode IX is set for release December 20th, 2019.
