Since 1964, children of every generation have grown up with a kindly English nanny named Mary. But she was no ordinary au pair. Mary Poppins brought magic and wonder everywhere she went, delighting kids the world over with her enchanted bottomless purse, flying umbrella, and animated friends.
Julie Andrews is eternally beloved for her performance as the magical babysitter, and through the subsequent decades, went on to become everyone’s favorite grandmother. So it’s very hard to imagine anyone else in the role. However, Disney did what Disney does, and decided to cash in on a few generations’ worth of nostalgia. 54 years later, Mary Poppins is back to entertain a whole new batch of children in Mary Poppins Returns. But is she still practically perfect in every way?
We got our first look tonight during the Oscars. An unexpected teaser premiered during the awards broadcast, giving us a few plot details, and a brief glimpse at Emily Blunt as the titular heroine. Watch it here:
Jane and Michael Banks, the two lonely children whose lives were changed by their fantastical caregiver, are now adults. Still living in the house on Cherry Tree Lane, the siblings have suffered a sad loss. It’s up to Mary to bring some magic back into their lives.
In addition to Emily Blunt, the film also stars Emily Mortimer, Ben Whishaw, Angela Lansbury, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Meryl Streep, and Colin Firth. Dick Van Dyke is rumored to make a cameo appearance, reprising his role as Bert, the jolly chimney sweep.
Mary Poppins Returns will land in theaters on Christmas day. Will you be watching? Tell us in the comments!
