Action blockbusters seem to suit Gerard Butler. He’s starred in a slew of them over the last two decades, and doesn’t appear to be slowing down yet, as Den of Thieves 2 is officially in the works!
The film is set to bring back the cast of the first, including Butler, Curtis Jackson, Tucker Tooley, O’Shea Jackson Jr, Mark Canton ,and Alan Siegel. (Siegel is also Butler’s production company partner. Their company is producing the film.) Director Christopher Gudegast is also slated to return.
Further details are slim at the moment, but Deadline gives us a brief synopsis:
“Den of Thieves 2 will find Nick (Butler) on the hunt in the streets of Europe closing in on Donnie (Jackson Jr.) who is embroiled in the dangerous world of diamond thieves and the infamous Panther mafia, as they plot a massive robbery of the world’s biggest diamond exchange.”
It sounds like another action-packed heist film is on the way, in the vein of predecessors such as Heat and The Town.
While Den of Thieves was Gudegast’s directorial debut, he has worked with Butler in the past. He wrote the screenplay for London Has Fallen, the second installment in Butler’s White House security action thriller series. The busy Scot is currently filming part 3, Angel Has Fallen. A release date for DoT2 hasn’t been set in stone. But according to Deadline, the project will be fast tracked, so we can most likely expect it sometime next year.
