It’s been awhile since we heard anything regarding Blumhouse’s Five Nights at Freddy’s movie adaptation. But according to Deadline, the wheels are finally moving, with Christopher Columbus set to write, direct, and produce the film! According to the report:
Chris Columbus has signed on to write, direct and produce Blumhouse’s screen adaptation of Scott Cawthon’s popular video game Five Nights at Freddy’s, which centers on a security guard battling animatronic robots that come to life in a Chuck E. Cheese-like venue.
Columbus has quite a history in Hollywood with writing and directing. He previously directed the first two Harry Potter films, and if that doesn’t put your faith in him – he was also the writer for Gremlins. Still don’t believe he has what it takes for a new scary movie project? The recent horror hit The Witch was executive produced by him.
The Five Nights at Freddy’s film adaptation will also have Jason Blum and original game creator Scott Cawthon attached as producers as well. It sure sounds like a promising combination to me.
Although Five Nights at Freddy’s may sound like a silly concept for a film, I’m eager to see how it’s handled. The horror genre used to launch dozens of films like this back in the day, concepts that seemed outlandish and weren’t afraid to take risks.
What we have now in the genre is a creative drought. While it could be argued that an adaptation of a game like Five Nights at Freddy’s only adheres to said drought, I say the contrary. One of the few elements the horror genre lacks is a film about creepy animatronic animals in a haunted pizzeria, and I’m so ready for a flick about just that.
In the game series…
The main Five Nights at Freddy’s series consists of horror-themed video games, in which the player usually takes on the role of a night-time employee at a location canonically connected to Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, a fictional children’s-oriented restaurant similar to Chuck E. Cheese’s and ShowBiz Pizza.
The film still has no official release date.
