Last week, it was reported that certain groups were attempting to bring down the audience score of Black Panther on both IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes in an attempt to make a statement and potentially ruin the film’s Box Office taking. However, recent reports are currently tracking the film for a fairly impressive opening weekend. Read on to find out how much the film is expected to make.
Hollywood tracking service, NRG, initially projected the film to have an opening weekend gross of $125 Million Dollars, a figure which was last week upped to $150 Million. Now, with the film already being released internationally and the domestic release only days away, the projected taking has now been adjusted to an incredible $165 Million. Take that, Trolls!
This incredible number will put it just shy of the Top Ten Biggest Openings of all-time, just behind Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. It will also make it the fifth largest opening for an MCU film with Iron Man 3, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Age of Ultron and The Avengers ahead of it. Pretty good feat, considering it is neither the third part of a trilogy like Iron Man and Cap’s outings, nor is it an ensemble movie like the two Avengers films.
This figure does actually mean that it will take the record for Biggest Opening Weekend for February off the previous title holder, Deadpool, back in 2016. Not only would it take the record from the Tim Miller film, it managed to beat it by nearly $30 Million dollars, which in itself is pretty damn impressive.
This record breaking performance is likely down to the critical acclaim the film has been recieving since the reviews first began hitting the net a couple of weeks back. It’s also down to the fact that this is a historical event due to it being the first instance of a Superhero film featuring an almost all-black cast.
Overall, it’s incredible to see this film doing well, something it most definitely deserves. Having seen the film earlier today, I can say that Ryan Coogler and all the cast have delivered something special. Black Panther hits theaters stateside this Friday.
