Update: Sony has revealed that John Krasinski is not playing Peter Parker for Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse. The original story remains.
Marvel’s animated features been fairly scarce and at points even forgettable. It’s been ages since the Marvel animated movies line-up has expanded anywhere and with some odd anime titles and a bigger focus on the Disney televised cartoons, these films have grown to obscurity (perhaps aside from introducing us to Nolan North’s iconic voice to Deadpool for years to come). That’s what makes Marvel’s comeback to the animated film world something exciting with their feature Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
The focus on fan favorite Miles Morales being introduced is a huge plus with its new game plan for animated movies. Liev Schreiber as a potential Spider-man villain and the hard-hitter news of Tom Hardy to reprise his Venom role that same year, is also very interesting. Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s involvement in the script makes it pretty cool too. Things can get quite immersive in what seems like a pretty ambitious project.
As it turns out, FandomWire has hit us with another update on who will play the original Web Slinger himself, Peter Parker. What was explained as “a source close to the production”, John Krasinski of The Office fame will be taking the part of the iconic character. He was even noted to have been recording alongside the same booth as Hardy himself.
Lord and Miller describe Peter’s interpretation as the “grown up in the room”, an evolving clarification that he will serve a more mentor role towards Miles Morales as opposed to his younger and inexperienced days we’ve known him in a lot of the mainstream media.
What’s interesting here is that this past weekend, (as we referenced above) it was reported that the film will be connected to the upcoming Venom movie – which asks this question: Could John Krasinski also be playing an older Peter Parker for Sony? We know there was the report that Tom Holland’s Peter Parker would be in Venom – but maybe this is the case?
According to Collider Movie Talk’s Jon Schnepp:
“I’m gonna say it right here on this show, Spider-Man is gonna be in Venom….For the last couple months, we’ve been talking about Venom, we’ve been hearing about how Sony’s keeping it all separated. Spider-Man’s in the Marvel Cinematic Universe but every other character that’s in the Spider-Man universe is separate.”
This may prove to be a very focused year for Spider-man on film, as he will not also be appearing in this and Avengers: Infinity War, but possibly a third film, if the Venom story is accurate.
Supporting roles and cameos aside, it’s interesting to note the only main Spider-Man feature will not be Tom Holland in the role but Jim “Big Tuna” Halpert.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse will be the released worldwide December 14th, 2018.
