In a scenario identical to the Hellraiser franchise, the latest Children of the Corn sequel, Children of the Corn: Runaway, has finally been given a trailer and release date. While both films have been completed for some time, they’ve been given little information or promotional details since their initial announcements, giving doubts to fans about their quality.
As most fans are already aware, Dimension tends to put out sequels to Hellraiser and Children of the Corn for the sole purpose of keeping the rights. Why on earth they’d want to keep the rights just so they can shell out cheap direct-to-video sequels is beyond me, but some fans are hopeful these movies will be different.
One such reason is that this Children of the Corn sequel is directed by John Gulager, the director of Feast. He managed to shoot the film secretly in Oklahoma City, where filming eventually wrapped on April 2nd of 2016.
Of course, the trailer doesn’t seem to be too enticing, unfortunately. Many scenes appear to indicate the same nonsensical, odd style of the other endless home video sequels. In fact they seem to completely remake the diner sequence from the original 1984 adaptation, so for whatever reason it might just be another loose remake.
Regardless, here’s the plot for the new film…
Children of the Corn: Runaway tells the story of young, pregnant Ruth, who escapes a murderous child cult in a small Midwestern town. She spends the next decade living anonymously in an attempt to spare her son the horrors that she experienced as a child. Ruth and her son end up in a small Oklahoma town, but something is following her. Now, she must confront this evil or lose her child.
The film is set for release on home video formats on March 13, 2018.
