Although it has yet to be officially announced by MGM, it looks like original RoboCop writer Ed Neumeier has been working with the studio in writing a new entry for the franchise. And, interestingly enough, it’s supposed to go back to the roots of the original film.
The news comes from an interview Neumeier had with Zeitgeist Magazine, where he revealed his excitement to be working on such a project so long after the original.
“I didn’t expect to be talking about [RoboCop] thirty years later. It was kind of the start of my career and later we did Starship Troopers – which was an enormous movie that took forever.” Neumeier told Zeitgeist Magazine. “I think all of that came out of that and it’s nice that people are still interested in RoboCop and they have me working on a new one at MGM right now so maybe we’ll get another one out of it.”
Unfortunately he couldn’t give too many details about what the film’s story would be, aside from continuing where the original left off.
“Well, here’s what I’ll say. We’re not supposed to say too much. There’s been a bunch of other RoboCop movies and there was recently a remake and I would say this would be kind of going back to the old RoboCop we all love and starting there and going forward. So it’s a continuation really of the first movie. In my mind. So it’s a little bit more of the old school thing.”
Neumeier didn’t return to work on the actual RoboCop 2, or any of the other films in the franchise, so it may be promising to have him working with the series again. He also worked with RoboCop director Paul Verhoeven on Starship Troopers, so maybe he’ll be the right person to implement the social commentary, satire, and violence that made the original RoboCop so memorable.
The 2014 remake of RoboCop didn’t really do well commercially or critically, so it’s not really a big surprise that the film will be ignored.
There’s currently no official confirmation from MGM and no other release date or production info, but we’ll keep you updated on any further developments.
