Our favorite erstwhile Asgardian princes, Thor and Loki, have had an evolving, but always recognizable, style throughout their numerous films. However, that very nearly had a major change in the third solo installment, Thor: Ragnarok. Concept artists Jackson Sze and Aleksi Briclot have shared their early ideas for the two characters, and they’re pretty “out there.”
Sze’s art, shared on Instagram, shows Thor without his trademark silver chestplate and red cape. Instead, being stranded on the trash planet Sakaar, his armor is a hodgepodge of pieced-together scraps. He apparently used whatever he could find, fashioning a small shield for one arm. The other has an almost bionic-looking sleeve; and a strange, birdlike helmet protects his head. Check out the image here:

Loki, meanwhile, has a completely different kind of style change. He’s still clad in green, black, and gold, just as we’re used to seeing him. His makeover sits primarily on his head. Gone is the long black mane fangirls swoon over. In its place is a stark-looking mohawk, and the rest of the head is shaved. This certainly would have been a drastic change for the trickster.

It’s also worth noting that pictured next to Loki is Fenris the wolf, favorite pet of Hela (and one of Loki’s children in Norse mythology). That presence, in combination with the severe hair and hateful expression, paints a much more villainous Loki than the one depicted in the film. Here’s the some of the other concepts for the movie:

It’s more than fair to say that these designs would have definitely changed the movie. We’ll see Thor and Loki next in Avengers: Infinity War when it hits theaters on May 4th.
