This year is a very special year for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, because 2018 marks ten years since the critically acclaimed shared universe began with Iron Man. One of the ways that the franchise is celebrating this is with Avengers: Infinity War, the culmination of the Eighteen films that came before it. However, it seems as though Marvel are only really taking the films into account with the marketing making no reference to any of the small screen heroes who populate the universe. This has led fans to believe that there is no place for these characters in the universe. However a recent image of one of the film’s Lego sets have given some that it will be the contrary.
The image in question came from a series of leaked Lego sets for the upcoming film. One such set, The Battle in the Sanctum Santorum, appears to show a New York city street that the heroes and villains are battling on. On that street however is a newspaper stand with an interesting front page. The page apparently shows none of than Daredevil, complete with his red suit and Billy club accompanied by the headline Crime Floods the Streets. The headline is likely a reference to the characters focus on dealing with the street level crime that we see in his series. What’s interesting is that the Newspaper’s name is the New York Bulletin, which is the same Newspaper that Karen Page works for in the universe.

Apologies for reactivating early but had to point this out.

It’s difficult to know whether this will actually make it’s way into the film itself, seeing has Lego sets in the past have been less than reliable. One set from Iron Man 3 featured the titular hero battling a bearded Mandarin, who is riding around in a buggy sporting a nifty flamethrower. Another set for Ant-Man saw Hank Pym suiting up to help Scott Lang take on Yellowjacket. So really, just because it’s in a Lego set, doesn’t mean it will definitely happen. It could just be cheeky Marvel Easter egg put into the set by an employee at Lego or it could be that this is how the film is going to reference the wider universe without actually including them.
The inclusion of the TV characters into the film universe has been something that fans have wanted for a while now, with many feeling as though the connectivity only appears to go one way. If there is any character who deserves to make the leap into the big screen, it is most definitely Charlie Cox’s Man Without Fear. His portrayal of the titular hero in Daredevil has been met with an incredible amount of acclaim.
For what it’s worth, Charlie Cox had some interesting comments just last month when asked about a potential crossover:
“I’m afraid I can’t tell you that at all. That is a secret.”
He’s also said he’s definitely love for a crossover to happen – back in 2016:
“I’d love that too. Those Easter eggs are thrilling to me. As they are to all of you guys, the fans. Sadly, Elden and myself have not been invited to the conversations that take place where they make those decisions. So, until we are invited to those conversations, we have no idea what’s going to happen.”
It’s also worth pointing out what Marvel’s Jessica Jones showrunner Melissa Rosenberg said about what type of role The Defenders play in Infinity War:
“None whatsoever.”
She added:
“Our partners are Marvel, and if we’re doing something that’s counter to [their continuity], they would pull us back or orient us on the right path, so clearly we’re [okay]. But we’re very much in our own world.”
We likely won’t find out whether this will actually happen in the film until it actually hits theaters on May 4th. It would definitely be something that would prove that the Netflix shows deserve their place in the universe.
