Steppenwolf, the villain in this year’s Justice League, was seen as somewhat of a disappointment by many. Personally, I didn’t find the CGI nearly as bad as the rest of the internet apparently did, but I digress. It turns out, however, the character almost had a much more terrifying design.
Conceptual artist Jerad S. Marantz posted the following design to his Instagram page:

Some complained about Steppenwolf’s motivations in the film not really being explained, but that’s probably due to the fact that Warner Bros. cut out giant parts of the film – including scenes with Darkseid and a way different Batman! According to Kevin Smith:
“Batman was also more remorseful over his darker days and treatment of Superman, behaving in a much less jokey way, even going on a suicide mission at the end, believing he needs to sacrifice himself to atone for becoming a murderer and trying to kill the Man of Steel.”
As for us ever getting to see the Zack Snyder Director’s Cut, that decision lies with Warner Bros. and also hinges on whether or not it actually exists – as conflicting reports are out there on the subject. Snyder himself says he hasn’t actually seen the theatrical cut, though:
“I will be honest, I have not seen the film since I stepped away. You know I love these characters. I wish only I could only finish it for you and the others who love MOS, BvS.”
Here’s hoping we one day get to see the vision that Snyder intended for us to see, but who knows if it’ll ever happen. It’s also been reported that Snyder and WB aren’t on the best of terms.
Justice League should be released to home video in the coming months.
