It’s undeniable that this year’s IT Movie was a massive success, as it was a major hit with both critics and audiences everywhere. Bill Skarsgård‘s portrayal of Pennywise the Clown was seen as a big success as well, but a lot of fans still have some unanswered questions about the film, including the ending.
Some spoilers if you haven’t seen the film, but CinemaBlend had a chance to ask child actor Wyatt Oleff where Pennywise went after he was defeated by The Losers Club at the end of the film, and Oleff said:
“Like I’m just coming up with this on the spot but it would be really cool if there was like a separate layer to the, what’s that space called? Cistern. If there was like a lower layer to that that would be really cool. Yeah, like his like official nest area.”
We already know Pennywise will return in IT: Chapter 2, and Skarsgård himself has revealed what he wants to see of the character for the next installment:
“The first movie worked so well at what it is trying to do, I think, and ultimately that is the kids’ story, and you follow these kids and you sort of fall in love with these kids. And the second one will be the adult story. And I think the right way to do it is to make that movie actively different. … I think there might be worth exploring sort of the psychological aspects of horror, but also maybe the sort of cosmological existence of this being. What is he, and where does he come from?”
He added:
“…it’s hardly answered in the novel, either. I mean, it’s very abstract. And I kind of like that. It could be almost a sort of [serialized] sort of psychedelic trip if you go into the mind of Pennywise. And if you’ve read the novel you know that they do actually go into his mind. Or they go into this transdimensional place, and they sort of beat him in this place. Which might be interesting, what that place would be, and what would it look like. There’s opportunities, I think, and I’m excited for it.”
If it’s anything like the first movie, fans are definitely going to be into the second chapter as well. Hopefully, the filmmakers will dig a little deeper into Pennywise this time around, but we’re sure Andy Muschietti knows what he’s doing.
IT will be released on Blu-ray January 9th with a Director’s Cut coming sometime in 2018. IT: Chapter 2 hits theaters on September 6th, 2019.
